North Sea Solutions for Innovation in Corrosion for Energy

Corrosion is a major cost, efficiency, and safety factor in the operation of offshore and subsea devices. Solving corrosion issues has the potential to bring new devices to the market faster and reduce the levelized cost of energy. NeSSIE (North Sea Solutions for Innovation in Corrosion for Energy) explored the existing knowledge of anti-corrosion technology and novel material solutions in the maritime sector supply chain to develop demonstration projects for offshore renewables in the North Sea. This project, co-funded by the EMFF programme of the European Union, started in May 2017 and ran until April 2019 with the participation of 8 partners from 5 countries.

About NeSSIE

NeSSIE project took place between 2017 and 2019 and tapped into the existing knowledge of anti-corrosion technology/novel materials solutions in the maritime sector supply chain to develop demonstration projects for offshore renewables in the North Sea. The corrosion solutions, when developed and commercialised, have the potential to provide global growth and job creation opportunities in remote regions in the EU.

The project had the following key aims:

Develop and scope 3 offshore renewables demonstration projects relating to corrosion issues by drawing on existing maritime supply chain expertise
Accelerate the deployment and cost reduction of wave, tidal and offshore wind devices

Support the demonstration project developed to access public and private investment
Impact the North Sea Basin economy significantly

Key activities of the project include an assessment of innovative corrosion solutions in wave, tidal and offshore wind, through:

Technology roadmap and new materials
Supply chain analysis

Supporting consortia in scoping and developing demo, bankable projects

The extended impact included greater collaboration within the value chain - developers and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), market focused demonstration projects, and new opportunities for SMEs to create jobs and grow in the Blue Economy.

The EU added value of the project was particularly found in (i) building a new model applicable to other cluster partnerships, (ii) fostering the transfer of technology solutions to new sectors, and (iii) strengthening regional cooperation through the Vanguard Initiative.

The project had a total of 8 partners from 5 countries and was supported with a total budget of roughly 860,000 EUR for 24 months between 2017 and 2019 by the European Commission.

This project included the participation of 8 partners from 5 countries. An industry advisory group included the DALARNA SCIENCE PARK, OFFSHORE ENERGY CLUSTER (now ENERGY CLUSTER DENMARK), MERINOVA, HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS ENTERPRISE and SPRI GROUP.
