The positive economic development of our region is result of a long-standing economic strategy and good cooperation between actors in the region as well as in interregional partnerships such as the Vanguard Initiative.

The recent economic development of Lower Austria is very encouraging. According to the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS), Lower Austria's economic growth of 3.3 percent in 2018 is well above the Austrian average of 2.8 percent. At 22,554 euros in 2017, the people of Lower Austria had the highest purchasing power in Austria. Since 2013, Lower Austrian exports have exceeded the 20 billion euro mark, most recently 20.1 billion euro in 2016.

These developments are the result of a long-standing economic strategy and good cooperation between actors in the region as well as in interregional partnerships such as the Vanguard Initiative.

The Lower Austria Smart Specialisation Strategy fosters regional and economic development through research, development and innovation, mainly with the help of two programmes:

  1. Cluster Programme: The cluster initiatives contribute significantly to the region's specialisation on the one hand by focusing on certain economic and technological fields of strength in the region, on the other hand by continuously identifying and advancing new priority topics with innovation potential and regional value creation. ecoplus as cluster management umbrella organisation currently manages 4 cluster initiatives in the field of green building, food, plastics and mechatronics.
  2. The Technopol Programme provides support to 4 R&D locations in the region combining higher education, research and businesses in very specific technology niches with potential for international excellence and regional value creation. Krems, the Technopol for health technologies focusses on apheresis, regenerative medicine, inflammation, water & health. Tulln, the Technopol for natural resources & biobased technology focusses on biobased process technology, agriculture and biotechnology, food and feed safety. Wiener Neustadt, the Technopol for medicine- and material technology focusses on materials, medical technology, surfaces, tribology, sensorics actuators. Wieselburg, the Technopol for bioenergy, agriculture- and food technology focusses on bioenergy systems, agricultural technology, food technology, water management
