    Directors from the 32 Vanguard Initiative regions today joined in welcoming the European Commission’s continued advancement of Smart Specialisation approaches in its future budget.

    On the occasion of its annual Directors meeting on 28 June 2018, the Vanguard Initiative regions took stock of the European Commission’s proposals for the 2021-2027 Multiannual financial framework (MFF) and related sectoral regulations.

    A matchmaking event within the demo-case for Nanowires will be held on the 17th of May, in Lund, Sweden. The objective is to showcase the potential of companies working with nanowire-focused products, and to facilitate engagement of international partners in joint efforts, creating new inter-regional value chains spanning throughout Europe. The event offers opportunities for bilateral meetings between actors in the field of material sciences and nanotechnology. Read more and register here.

    Region Värmland (SE) joined the Vanguard Initiative in November 2017. To learn from other members, Region Värmland interviewed four regions on how they organise their work within the network. Navarra, Basque Country, Central Sweden and Skåne European Office were the Brussels’ based offices that were interviewed for the report, answering questions on the work of their Brussels’ offices, regional authorities and clusters in Vanguard.

    On 22 February 2018, national representatives from 25 EU member states, Commission officials and cluster policy experts met in Brussels during EU Industry day to share experiences and discuss how to better use and develop clusters for driving industrial change and growth. Wallonia was one of the participating regions at the forum and was given the opportunity to give input on how to design and implement effective cluster policies that can create cluster-driven growth.

    University of Bologna and Alfred Nobel Science Park are pleased to announce the launch of a joint research and development package under the umbrella of the Vanguard Initiative in the area of additive manufacturing and development of hybrid components. The demo case is made possible through regional co-investment by the two Vanguard-regions Emilia Romagna and Örebro County.

    The regions of Wallonia, Flanders and Brussels recently published the Belgian position paper on the EU’s industrial strategy, as communicated by the European Commission in September. Belgium welcomes the Communication on a renewed EU industrial strategy, but requests a further long-term consolidation of this strategy in line with strategic objectives to be set for 2030. In its position paper, Belgium underlines the importance of interregional innovation investments and collaboration, pointing to the Vanguard Initiative’s experience.

    In early December, regional stakeholder involved in the pilot on High Performance Production through 3D-Printing will gather in Brussels for a plenary meeting. The meeting aims to facilitate discussions on potential funding tracks and the structure of cooperation projects formed in each of the pilots’ six areas of joint demonstration. New regions and stakeholders are invited to partake in the meeting and to get involved in pilot activities to further strengthen the cooperation.

    Senior political representatives from 29 of the 33 member regions of the Vanguard Initiative met in Brussels on the 22nd of November to reconfirm their political commitment to further implementing the Vanguard methodology. Five new regions (Autonomous Province of Trento, Lower Austria, West and East Slovenia, Region Orebro County and Varmland) joined the recently created Vanguard ASBL.

    With the objective of further deepening transregional cooperation projects, two of the demo-cases within the Vanguard Initiative’s ESM-pilot will be hosting events in Milan. The events, that will be held on the 30th of November and the 1st of December, aims to build a critical mass of regional actors for a project regarding an upscaling of the use of new, innovative materials based on plastics.

    Although its relatively recent launch, the ADMA pilot based project NeSSIE is progressing at a steady pace. September marked the launch of the interregional collaboration on anticorrosion technology and novel subsea material solutions own website and steps are now being taken to further develop NeSSIEs’ three demonstration projects.
