    Thursday October 22nd, the second plenary meeting within the Nanotechnology pilot took place at Skåne European Office. The objective of the meeting was twofold, firstly to present and discuss the outcome of the mapping exercise that took place between summer and end September; and secondly to elaborate potential areas for joint demonstration cases. Ten out of twelve regions participated in the meeting.

    On 27th October 2015, under the current Chairmanship of the Basque Country, the Brussels-based representatives met at the Emilia-Romagna EU office to discuss the progress of the Vanguard Initiative as a whole as well as the updates of its 5 pilots: Advanced Manufacturing/Energy (led by Scotland and the Basque Country); Bio-economy (led by Randstad region and Lombardy); 3D-Printing (led by South Netherlands, Flanders and Norte); Nano-technology (led by Skåne and Tampere region); and Efficient and sustainable manufacturing (led by Catalonia and Lombardy).

    On 22 September 2015, the Vanguard Pilot on ‘3D Printing’ had its 5th Plenary Meeting. Over the past months and after a preliminary ‘mapping’ of capabilities, challenges and ambitions in the 24 EU-regions participating, 7 first cases for joint-demonstration had been identified and elaborated. The 7 demo-cases identified encompass various domains of application such as healthcare, automotive, textile, creative industries or machinery and tooling.

    The Vanguard Initiative is highlighted as an important driver for interregional co-investment in European value chains in an article in the latest edition of Panorama Magazine. The article, entitled “Transforming Regional Economies through Smart Specialisation”, provides a substantial case study of the Vanguard Initiative to demonstrate the opportunities related to interregional implementation of smart specialisation strategies.

    Last Thursday, 16th April 2015, Mr. Wojciech Saługa, President of Silesia Region together with Mr. Marek Sowa, President of Malopolska Region have signed the Milan Declaration.

    It is a confirmation of a strong political engagement of these two Polish regions, not only to the values and objectives of Vanguard Initiative, but most of all to the interregional cooperation and future economic development of Europe.

    On 19th February the Asturias Regional Government organized an awareness-raising meeting in Oviedo, the Capital City of the Region. The event was led by the Regional Minister of Presidency, Mr. Guillermo Martínez and the Director General for Industry, Mr Luis Ángel Colunga and addressed to public and private entities of Asturias.

    Over 100 senior delegates gathered in Scotland last week to reflect on the progress that the Vanguard Initiative has made to date and to discuss and agree the actions required at regional, Vanguard and European level to consolidate and build on the early work of the Initiative.

    Saxon State Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Transport Martin Dulig officially signed the Milan Declaration at the event ´Advancing Europe´s Industry – The Role of the Key Enabling Technology Advanced Manufacturing´ in Saxony's Liaison Office Brussels on February 24th. Mr. Esa Halme, Region Mayor of Tampere Region (Finland) and currently chair of the Vanguard Initiative officially represented the Vanguard Initiative. 90 participants attended the event and signing of the declaration.

    On Monday 23 February, Vanguard Initiative and European Commission (EC) representatives encountered stakeholders from business, innovation sector and local administration from Southern Poland regions. The announced goal of the conference was to foster more interest from regional partners for the VI activities.
