    The Vanguard Initiative has recently welcomed Farha Brahmi as the new Vanguard Initiative Network Manager. She previously worked for nine years for Invest NI, Northern Ireland’s regional economic development agency. Prior to this, she worked for the ERRIN network. As a result, she has substantial experience and knowledge in different regional policy areas, with a focus on research and innovation.

    On 16 January 2019, the Permanent Representation of Sweden to the EU and the Vanguard Initiative organised an informal information and discussion session about the topic How to stimulate interregional innovation investments – what would the proposed Interreg “component 5” bring us? The session gathered 60 regional representatives and 20 representatives from Member States’ Permanent Representations to the EU. The event was a follow-up of the meeting hosted by the Dutch Permanent Representation on the 25th of May 2018.

    On 18 December 2018, the Vanguard ESM Pilot held a plenary meeting in Brussels, hosted by the Lombardy Region. The meeting delivered the state of the art of the ESM Pilot, showing the progress of demo-cases and highlighting the challenges for 2019.

    The Vanguard Efficient and Sustainable Manufacturing (ESM) Pilot Project is pleased to invite you to the 2018 Plenary Event that will be organised in Brussels.

    The meeting will be focused on the presentation of 2018 activities and results achieved by ESM demo-cases. Moreover, pilot coordinators will present  an overview of 2019 Action Plan.

    The project application of the 3D-printing Pilot Project to create a pan-European digital platform connecting all 3D-printing (3dP) demonstration facilities in the EU was approved last week by DG Grow. The project aims to foster awareness, knowledge and uptake of 3DP technologies by facilitating and promoting SMEs´ access to high quality services related to testing, validating and certifying 3DP solutions.

    On the 14th of December the Pilot Project on High Performance Production through 3D-Printing will organise a Plenary meeting, The event will aim at reinforcing progress made (e.g. the implementation and targeted replication of a cross regional demonstration project), embracing promising opportunities (e.g. the expected launch of the ‘3DP Pan EU Platform for demonstration services’) and addressing main bottlenecks (sessions dedicated to ‘cross regional funding’, ‘certification’, etc.).

    On 26 November, the Vanguard Initiative’s lobby efforts to defend the newly proposed EU-funding scheme “Interregional Innovation Investments” took another dimension during a session organised in Bilbao, during the smart specialisation thematic platform days. The event in Bilbao gathers more than 100 regions from all 25 partnerships from the three Thematic Smart Specialisation Platforms.

    On the 6th of November, the Vanguard Initiative organised, jointly with the European Parliament SME Intergroup a breakfast session dedicated to the new Interreg Component 5 ‘Interregional Innovation Investment’. After a presentation by the Commission, the EP rapporteur, Mr Pascal Arimont, explained the state of play of discussions within the EP about this proposal. On behalf of the Vanguard Initiative,  Wim de Kinderen showcased examples of interregional collaboration and expected benefits from this new tool for European Regions.

    On 29 May 2018, the European Commission has published draft regulations for the 2021-2027 Cohesion Policy programming period. Among these texts is the proposed Regulation on specific provisions for the European territorial cooperation goal (INTERREG, 2018/0199(COD)) which features a new INTERREG Component 5 on Interregional Innovation Investments, financed at almost €1 billion, representing 11,5% of the Interreg budget.
