    To address the demand for lower costs and need to secure competitive advantages through digitalization in the area of offshore windfarms, the project Scaling-up Digitalization Of Critical Components in OFF-shore wind turbines” (DOCC-OFF) has been developed, stemming from the ADMA Energy demo-case Sensors, Instrumentation and Remote Monitoring.

    Technical Assistance Facility (TAF), launched by the European Commission as a tool to support Smart Specialisation Platforms (S3P) -Industry investment projects has been open for a second assessment round of applications. The awarded projects were presented by the end of January 2020 and two of the five chosen projects come from the Vanguard Initiative; De- Remanufacturing for circular economy (demo-case, ESM-pilot) and SMBio-LNG (use-case within Liquified bio-methane demo-case, Bioeconomy pilot).

    The Bioeconomy Pilot and the Biobased Industry Consortium (BIC) work closely together and exchange information concerning the biobased industries’ topics and the Bioeconomy Pilot’s cases for joint demonstration to exploit all potential synergies. One significant result of this cooperation is the launch of the “Biobased platform for regions”, focused on stimulating bio-based investments by connecting regions and industries.

    “DigiPrime – Digital Manufacturing Platforms for Connected Smart Factories” is a new project developed and successfully submitted to Horizon 2020 by the ESM Pilot’s demo-case De-and Remanufacturing. The project will develop, populate and operate a new concept of circular economy digital platform, with the aim to unlock new circular business models based on data-enhanced recovery and reuse of functions and materials from high value-added post-use products. Focus will be given to create trustable data-sharing mechanisms, preserving the confidentiality of business-critical data.

    The Vanguard Initiative network continues to work towards strengthening EU industry, and making sure we build Europe’s innovation capacity through complete EU value chains.  However, the implications of COVID-19 mean that all of us are rethinking our immediate priorities and about how we deliver on those.

    In a new non-paper, the Vanguard Initiative calls for the adoption of an ambitious EU industrial Strategy and expresses full support of the European Commission’s ambition to adopt a renewed EU industrial strategy as a central initiative in delivering the European Green Deal.

    The non-paper outlines several key principles that the Vanguard Initiative would like to see embedded in the EU industrial strategy :

    The Nano Pilot demo-cases have been making incremental progress between September – December 2019 and continue to have the support of the network manager and the two leading regions, Emilia-Romagna and Skåne. The Nanowires for ICT, Energy & Sensors and the NeMs4Bio demo-cases have been working on their concept notes and have received feedback from different Vanguard regions as well as local actors.

    The ESM Pilot annual meeting took place in Brussles on 13th December. Besides presenting the progress of the Pilot and its demo-cases, the meeting also had the intent to discuss potential synergies with the European Commission in the future programming period.

    On 21st November 2019 in Brussels, the Vanguard Initiative’s Annual Political Meeting (APM) took place, with Regional Ministers and senior representatives from Vanguard Initiative’s 36 Member Regions meeting to give renewed direction to the Vanguard Initiative’s work programme, with a particular focus on financing, policy influencing and communication.
