Presentation of the Region
Friuli Venezia Giulia is an autonomous region located at the extreme north-east of the Italian territory. Bordering Austria and Slovenia, FVG, a region of 1.2 million population, has traditionally been Italy’s “gateway” to the Balkan peninsula and the crossway between north-south and west-east European corridors.
Friuli-Venezia Giulia is comparatively wealthy in the Italian context, with middle-to-high employment rates and GDP per capita, and a very equal wealth distribution compared to the other Italian regions (second lowest Gini index in the country).
Regional spending in research and development is substantial, with a strong contribution from both the private and the public sector, putting the Region as top ranking among the Italian regions in the EU Regional innovation scoreboard.
The Region is outperforming in Italy in terms of exports of goods, benefitting of its favourable location, yet it is not equally advanced in terms of international business collaborations connected to RTDI.
