On Monday 23 February, Vanguard Initiative (VI) and European Commission (EC) representatives encountered stakeholders from business, innovation sector and local administration from Southern Poland regions. The announced goal of the conference was to foster more interest from regional partners for the VI activities.

The event was hosted by the Regional Chamber of Commerce of Silesia under the auspices of Marshalls of both regions: Marek Sowa (Malopolska) and Wojciech Saługa (Silesia). Regional Development Agencies of both regions, as well as Euro-centrum and Upper Silesian Fund from Silesia and Małopolskie Centre of Entrepreneurship and the LifeScience cluster from Malopolska were partners of this conference.

Representing the EC, Mr Francisco Caballero Sanz, Chief Economist from DG GROW, presented the wider context of the European industrial policy, the need for innovative industries and investment plans under the strategic investment plan. On behalf of the VI, Jan Larosse and Carl Albert Hjelmborn presented the background of the Vanguard Initiative, our achievements and our plans. An overview of the three pilot initiatives was also given. Afterwards, representatives of Marshalls Offices of both regions explained for joining the VI, why they value the Initiative and how they see it in the full picture of regional development strategies.

An exchange with the audience gave the opportunity to some 50 representatives of the regional economy to react and seek some clarifications. During the networking lunch some first contacts were established.

The presence of VI and EC representatives gave the occasion for informal talks with Mr Kazimierz Karolczak, Member of the Board of Silesia and Mr Tadeusz Donocik, President of the Regional Chamber of Commerce of Silesia.

Messrs. Marshalls M. Sowa and W. Saługa, as well as Malopolska and Silesia Offices in Brussels, express their warm thank-you to the VI Secretariat and Coordination group for their support to this event.
